Station 5: Hopping on the Number Line (Subtraction)
Objective: The student will find the difference of two numbers whose digits are 99 or less using a number line.
Materials:
Instruction:
Group the students in pairs, and give each pair a number line, a Number Line Subtraction Recording Sheet, counters, and digit cards. Student 1 will create a two-digit subtraction problem by drawing the digit cards. Then student 2 will use the number line to find the difference (by counting back by ones, tens, or twenties). Students can use the counters on the number line to keep track of their hops. Student 1 will record the number of hops the the Number Line Recording Sheet. Then the students will switch roles and play again.

Walk around and ask students how they found the difference. Have them explain the process verbally to check for understanding.

- For students who are struggling they can use a highlighter to highlight the tens on the number line to make counting back easier.
- Students who need more a challenge can predict what the difference will be before they use the number line
